Community Programming

Little Earth's Community Programs focus on providing positive community-wide initiatives to nurture a healthy environment for the residents at Little Earth and in the surrounding East Phillips neighborhood.
  • Safety Program-to continue reducing crime, Little Earth recently expanded its safety programming. Current initiatives include safe houses, a resident patrol, and the new Court Watch project, through which residents work with attorneys to write community impact statements used as legal evidence in the Hennepin County Courts. Little Earth's Safety Programs reach 650 residents annually.
  • Wellbriety Movement-through a new partnership with White Bison, Inc., Little Earth is now promoting this community-wide initiative to promote wellness, and drug and alcohol free families, by applying culturally appropriate activities and educational opportunities for residents and the wider community.
  • American Indian Cultural Program-Little Earth integrates American Indian art, music, dance, and values into all aspects of the community's programming. Little Earth sponsors monthly pow-wows and special events such as the annual Mother's Day Pow-Wow. An estimated 900 individuals, or nearly 100% of all residents, benefit from Little Earth's cultural programs.
  • Neighborhood Park & Recreational Facilities-The Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis has the highest concentration of children in the City of Minneapolis, yet it has the fewest number of recreational facilities. Little Earth is spearheading the expansion of the East Phillips Playground at 24th Street and 17th Street-creating an adequate safe outdoor play space for all 212 households at Little Earth and in the neighborhood.
Little Earth directly operates all Community programs, employing 2.0 FTE staff. Major community program funders include: Hennepin County, Minneapolis Empowerment Zone, Grotto Foundation, and the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation.
